In Louisiana, plan on the national typical home elevator cost of $30,000 to $50,000 installed. Call us today for a written quote, and we'll measure your home and tell you what it needs. The state adds no registration, yearly inspection or elevator licence for a lift in your house.
Prices by Kind of Home Lift
The type of lift you choose can make a big difference in price. The numbers below are what installation typically runs, drawn from published ranges.
For a two-story home, expect about $30,000 to $60,000, per HomeGuide, and each extra floor adds roughly $9,000 to $15,000.
Added Costs When the House Is Already Built
If your house is already standing, putting in a shaft costs an extra $5,000 to $25,000, per Willow Home. Fitting a lift into an existing house may require a floor opening, carpentry and electrical work, which is why it usually costs more than a new build.
A written quote shows which of these extras your house will actually need. Call us and ask for that quote.
Rules on Permits and Inspections
Under the State Fire Marshal's life safety law, the state treats elevators, platform lifts, and stair chairlifts as conveyance devices. Devices inside a one- or two-family home are excluded from that definition, per La. R.S. 40:1664.3. What that means for you: no state registration, no yearly check, and no state elevator licence for a residential lift.
The $150 state inspection fee and the yearly inspection itself are for places like churches and small businesses, not for a private home. The only paperwork you may need is a local building permit from your parish or city, and we can walk you through it when you call.
Who Can Install a Lift in Your Home?
The state does license conveyance device firms and mechanics, but not for work inside a private home. That limited mechanic licence is good for platform lifts, stair chairlifts, and LULA elevators in commercial and industrial settings and nowhere else. A LULA, by the way, is a small elevator meant for light-duty use.
You may still need a general contractor licensed by the State Licensing Board for Contractors. Since the state has no home elevator licence of its own, ask your installer which licences they carry.
Safety Code for Home Units
Home units fall under the residential code that your local office enforces. The State Fire Marshal's conveyance rules do not cover one- or two-family homes.
Help With the Bill in Louisiana
Two Louisiana options may help with the cost, depending on your needs and eligibility.
- LATAN Financial Loan Program: Run by the Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network, this offers fixed-rate, low-interest loans with extended terms for costly assistive technology, including home modifications. There is also a lease program.
- New Opportunities Waiver: This Medicaid waiver serves people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and it can pay for home accessibility adaptations up to $7,000 in each three-year stretch. The OCDD central office can approve a larger amount based on need, per state rules.
